PIZZA AND’ PROF NOVEMBER 30, 2010
Dr. Heather Richardson related to students her research on the effects of alcohol on rats and the possible implications of her findings when applied to college students. Alcohol, Dr. Richardson explained, actually induces stress hormones in rats' brains.
However, after a selection of rats were routinely given "binge" amounts of alcohol (for humans, that's five or more drinks in two hours for men and four or more drinks in that same time for women), the stress they experienced from withdrawal made them crave alcohol for relief. Dr. Richardson emphasized the likely parallels between this process of addiction and the ways in which people, especially college students, become addicted to alcohol. Binge drinking, in this case, has some serious potential consequences-especially for college students who are frequently stressed.
