ACADEMIC YEAR AT TRINITY COLLEGE, OXFORD, APPLY BY DEC 1
UMass Amherst has again been asked to propose a student to spend an academic year studying at Trinity College, Oxford University. The fields of study available for a one-year visiting student are English, History, Physics and what they title PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics). The Kathleen and David Scott Scholarship, in the amount of $20,000, is available to provide assistance to the student selected by Trinity College. The estimated total cost for the academic year at the current exchange rate amounts to $35,000.
To be considered for this opportunity, you must make the standard application to the International Programs office, with some extra materials for the Trinity program. The deadline for completed IPO applications for 2006-2007 is December 1, 2005. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact JoAnn Bernhard (jbernhar@ipo.umass.edu) at IPO as quickly as possible in order to begin the application process. TEXAS HOLD ‘EM “PLAY A HAND, LEND A HAND” TOURNAMENT, DEC 4
Join us for Commonwealth College’s first “Play a Hand, Lend a Hand” Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 4. The donation required to reserve a seat is 3 non-perishable food items or $5, all of which will be contributed to a food drive for the Open Pantry. How often do you get the chance to simultaneously gamble and help those in need? Pizza will be provided for all participants, and prizes will be awarded to the top 5 players in the tournament.
Forget or don’t know how to play poker? Show up at 3:30 p.m. for a review of the rules, techniques, and more!

DONATE YOUR BOOKS FOR HURRICANE RELIEF!
The community service club S.H.A.R.E is organizing a book drive to collect the books that the school will not buy back—and other books you’d like to donate. The book drive is taking place Dec. 15-22. Students can drop off books in various collection boxes located in the campus center. The drive is to benefit the National Center for Family Literacy's Hurricane Relief projects (http://www.famlit.org/). See the book drive flyer for complete information.

NEW COURSE - CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN NORTHEAST NORTH AMERICA
Honors 292J, Class# 58650, 3 Credits, TuTh 11-12:15, Prof. Jean S. Forward, Gen Ed IU
This course is an interdisciplinary case study examination of the colonization and development of specific ethnic communities in the Northeast corner of North America. Cross-disciplinary modes of inquiry such as historical source criticism, archaeology, history, ethnography and various forms of literary analysis will be used to explore the experiences of Mi’kmaq, Wampanoag, English Puritan, French Catholic, African American, Irish Catholic, Scottish Presbyterian, Puerto Rican and Cambodian population groups in the past and in the current multicultural situation. Small group research projects will focus on ethnic topics in the area of each campus. This course is constructed with interactive Distance Learning classroom discussions with classes on other campuses in the 5-college area, Massachusetts or the greater Northeast.
SUMMER AND YEAR INTERNSHIP/STUDY IN GERMANY INFO SESSION, DEC 6
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 5-7 p.m. the International Programs Office will be offering an information session on summer and academic year internship and study abroad opportunities in Germany. Information on programs in Denmark and Sweden will also be available. Come to the Campus Center, room 168C and meet returned students who participated in some of these programs.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) - in cooperation with science organizations in North America and Germany— is pleased to invite undergraduate students from the US and Canada in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and Engineering to apply for a summer research internship in Germany. RISE summer placements take place with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany. The RISE interns are matched with a doctoral student whom they assist and who will also serve as their mentor. Students may choose to attend any university in Germany.

Amherst’s Jones Library and jubilat announce the next reading in the 4th annual jubilat/Jones fall reading series:

Readings will take place in the Trustees Room at the Jones Library, 43 Amity Street in Amherst, and will be followed by a Q & A session with both guest poets, then a reception with light refreshments, during which visitors can meet the poets. All readings are free and open to the public.
This program is sponsored by the Friends of Jones Library, jubilat, and the Juniper Initiative of the UMass MFA Program for Poets and Writers. This program is also supported in part by a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council.
CREDIT REPORTING AND SCORING 101, DEC 5
The Massachusetts Bankers Association has teamed up with the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at UMass to bring you Eric Ellman, Director of Government Relations for the Credits Data Information Association! Mr. Ellman will be flying up from Washington to discuss the dangers of not knowing about personal credit and the immense impact it has on all of our lives. This will be a very important event that pertains to all members of the community, so everyone, students, non-students, professors and area residents are encouraged to attend. Take the opportunity to become informed about credit and get your questions answered!

R.M. Berry is the Publisher of Fiction Collective Two, an esteemed not-for-profit publisher of artistically adventurous fiction since 1974. He is the author of the novel Leonardo's Horse, a New York Times notable book of 1998, and the story collections Plane Geometry and Other Affairs of the Heart and Dictionary of Modern Anguish. His critical essays have appeared in such journals as Philosophy and Literature and Narrative. Join us as Mr. Berry discusses his experience in editing, publishing, arts administration,and promoting non-traditional fiction, and offers advice for emerging writers.
