NEW DEAN’S BOOK COURSE OFFERINGS, CSL & VIDEO
VIDEO DEAN’S BOOK COURSE, HONORS 391V
Commonwealth College introduces this spring a new course -- Video DBC -- that combines the final level of the Dean's Book Course with an introduction to the elements of documentary film production. Video DBC follows the regular Honors 391D curriculum but with an emphasis on documentary film projects. Students learn the foundations of video/film technique and theory necessary to produce their own short subject documentaries on topics related to the semester's text and arising out of their class-based research.
This is a special three-credit section of the Dean's Book Course, which meets 2 hours a week for the full semester and also for three separate 5-hour Saturday video field production workshops. Prerequisites are Honors 191D and 291D or Honors 291G. No previous film/video courses are required and all levels of experience are welcome.
Join and learn the how to place your views on the screen by stepping behind the camera. Meets Wed 10:10-12:05 and for three Saturday production sessions. Instructor: Adrian d’Errico, Producer, Lucid Production, Montague, MA. Register on Spire.
DEAN’S BOOK COURSE CSL (COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING)
CSL sections of the Dean's Book Course (Honors 291R and 391S) connect coursework to community service. In addition to the Dean’s Book Course curriculum, students complete 20 hours of community service in local organizations devoted to real-life issues raised in the text. In class, time is given to reflecting upon the service performed and discussing how it relates to the books.
CSL sections are a semester long and carry 3 credits. Students read two books -- the text chosen for regular DBC sections and a second book, chosen by the instructor.
Honors 291R fulfills the first two levels of the Dean's Book Course (Honors 191D and 291D) and follows the curricula for those two levels. It is open to second-semester freshmen and above. Meets TH 4:00-6:00 with instructor Carol Soules.
Honors 391S fulfills the second two levels (Honors 291D and 391D), follows the curricula for those levels, and is open to students with junior or senior status. Prerequisite: Honors 191D. Meets TU 7:00-9:00 with instructor Nicole Nemec.
