ELLIPSIS JOURNAL ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS

BECOME INVOLVED IN HOMETOWN HIGH!
During January, visit your old high school to talk about college life and to speak about the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Commonwealth College. Past student volunteers have commented on how much fun they had talking with high school students and telling them about their UMass experience. The best representatives of UMass are its students! To become involved, you'll need to complete the INFORMATION SHEET and send it by Nov. 9 to the contact at the bottom of the form. Then, you'll need to attend a one-and-a-half-hour training session. There are three sessions to choose from: November 14 and December 3 & 5. The sessions will be held in room 917 of the Campus Center from 6-7:30 all three days. In that session, you'll receive guidance on how to approach your high school and set up a visit, as well as pointers on presenting yourself and UMass.
CAN MR. SMITH GET TO WASHINGTON ANYMORE? NOV 1
( 2006) docu-drama - Using an underdog congressional bid as a springboard, director Frank Popper explores the dangers of political dynasties in this documentary that aired as part of PBS's Independent Lens series. In 2004, 29-year-old political unknown Jeff Smith decided to make a run for an open congressional seat in Missouri, and soon found himself facing off against a political Goliath. With only a passionate grassroots group of volunteers behind him, Smith's candidacy serves as a true test of the efficacy of the little guy in modern American politics.
Film Series showings take place Thursdays at 8:00pm in 504 Goodell. Films are free and open to all Commonwealth College members and their friends. Refreshments provided!
CHESS NIGHT - PLAY THE ROYAL GAME AT COMCOL, NOV 5
From beginners to experts, for those who like Chess or want to learn more about it, come and have fun playing Chess with other COMCOL students and COMCOL staff. But if you are a rated player please mention that when you RSVP. Come to play, come to learn, come to watch. All those in attendance will be entered into a raffle to win a brand new chess set. The games will start at 6:00 pm on Monday, Nov 5, in 504 Goodell (Honors lounge). RSVP to websupport@comcol.umass.edu. Pizza provided!
