ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK IN COMCOL
Grassroots Community Development is a four credit honors course that examines how poor communities use local knowledge and local resources to combat economic and political disenfranchisement. Students spend the spring term studying the theory of grassroots organizing and its application in a variety of case studies. We then spend our spring break working with a grassroots organization in the rural south. We return to the classroom after spring break to explore how our real world experiences and our classroom learning combine to enable us to act effectively to make change in the world.
The class is highly participatory and peer facilitated. Students can follow up with a second course that can be used to fulfill the ComCol Capstone requirement. Admission is by application only. Applications are Due Nov 17. Contact uact@anthro.umass.edu or keene@anthro.umass.edu for further information or visit our web site at http://www.courses.umass.edu/akeene/asb.html.
