UMASS/AMHERST MAJORS FAIR TO BE HELD NOVEMBER 3, 2004
Pre-Major Advising Services, Commonwealth College and Career Services will co-sponsor a MAJORS FAIR which will take place on Wednesday, November 3 from 6:00 8:00 pm in the Student Union Ballroom. All current and prospective students are cordially invited to attend.
The event will provide an opportunity for all undeclared students to explore potential areas of study while allowing current majors to learn about other options they may not know exist at the University.
Don’t miss this once-a-year chance to explore the impressive array of majors and resources available at UMass/Amherst! On no other occasion throughout the academic year will so much information be available under one roof in such a friendly, accessible setting.
Representatives from over 90 different departments will be present to answer questions and provide literature on major requirements and opportunities. Light refreshments provided by Career Services will make the occasion festive as well as informative.

MAKE HALLOWEEN CARDS FOR YOUR POLITICIANS!
Is there anything more frightening than the influence that money has in politics today? Here at UMass, Democracy Matters is a new organization fighting for "clean" elections that would publicly finance campaigns and restore the power where it ought to belong - in the people!
Send a spooky greeting to your elected representatives! Let them know that you care about the inextricable link between money and politics and would like to work to make government more accessible to all.
Members of Democracy Matters will be tabling in the Campus Center Concourse on Friday from 12-2! Stop by to make a Halloween card! We've got all the supplies you need!
CATCH THE INSIDE LINE
The Sport Management Club has developed a new series on campus called the Inside Line. The Inside Line is a series that reaches out to you, the student body, to find out what the hot sports topics are around campus.
For the first topic of the series, the Inside Line will be researching the poker phenomenon and why it is such a craze. The Inside Line wants to hear from all the avid or casual poker players out there telling us why they love playing poker, how much they play for, etc.
Contact Jeremy Gordon at jlgor0@student.umass.edu to request a poker survey. After all these surveys are done, we are going to try and find a professional poker player to interview pertaining to these surveys, so we need as much information as possible!
DISTINGUISHED FACULTY LECTURE SERIES
Monday, November 29, 2004
John J. McCarthy, Professor of Linguistics "Pahk Your Cah in Hahvahd Yahd:A Biography of the Boston Dialect"
What are the distinctive properties of this Eastern Massachusetts dialect, heard all over campus? Professor McCarthy, himself a speaker, will describe what is known about its history, geography, and demography, and test conclusions with data collected by students in Linguistics 101. He'll also use the famous r sound to show how speakers have a sophisticated, unconscious knowledge of linguistic structures and rules, and what this and other properties of the Boston accent reveal about how language is represented in the human mind.

WRITERS WORK: making art, making a living hosts a rich array of professionals working in fields related to literary, book, and other arts, but distinct from academia. Showcasing the ways writers and other artists find careers in which to apply their skills, and the ways art lovers bring the arts into their lives, editors, publishers, librarians, booksellers, arts administrators and other professionals share how their careers and their love of literary and other arts intersect. Writers Work is a program of the Juniper Initiative and is made possible by support from the MFA Program for Poets & Writers, English Dept., Commonwealth College, UMass Arts Council and Alumni Association.
