BECOME INVOLVED IN HOMETOWN HIGH!
During January, visit your old high school to talk about college life and to speak about the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Commonwealth College. Past student volunteers have commented on how much fun they had talking with high school students and telling them about their UMass experience. The best representatives of UMass are its students! To become involved, you'll need to complete the INFORMATION SHEET and send it by Nov. 9 to the contact at the bottom of the form. Then, you'll need to attend a one-and-a-half-hour training session. There are three sessions to choose from: November 14 and December 3 & 5. The sessions will be held in room 917 of the Campus Center from 6-7:30 all three days. In that session, you'll receive guidance on how to approach your high school and set up a visit, as well as pointers on presenting yourself and UMass.

NEW FILM SERIES - THE AMERICAN POLITICAL LANDSCAPE BEGINS WITH MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, OCT 25
To kick off "‘The American Political Landscape" Film Series, on Thursday, October 25th we will have a brief discussion and Q & A with Professor La Raja from the Political Science Department. This will begin at 7:15 in the Commonwealth College Lounge, followed by the first movie of the series:
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939 drama) - Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers, is appointed on a lark by the spineless governor of his state. He is reunited with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine. In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith through a scandal.
Films are free and open to all Commonwealth College members and their friends. Refreshments provided!

AUTHOR JESSICA STERN ADDRESSES STUDENTS
Jessica Stern, author of this fall's Dean's Book Course selection, Terror in the Name of God, spoke to students and faculty on Monday, October 15, in Bowker Auditorium. Dr. Stern enumerated what she considers the major risk factors for the spread of terrorism and recruitment of terrorists. She focused on four: poverty, lack of education, and "civilizational" as well as personal humiliation. The internet, she said, has become today's most dangerous tool for spreading "leaderless resistance" and "self-radicalization," mentioning in particular the Oct 15 New York Times article "An Internet Jihad Aims at U.S. Viewers." In closing, Dr. Stern explained the ways she sees current US foreign policy and actions in the Mideast as contributing to the global mobilization of "jihadists." Dr. Stern's presentation was followed by questions from the audience.
