UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA
Lanfranco Marcelletti, conductor
Estela Olevsky, piano
8:00 PM, Saturday, 23 October
Concert Hall, Fine Arts Center
This Saturday, 23 October, the University Orchestra will be performing a full concert with faculty soloist Estela Olevsky. The program will include Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 5 in D minor ("Reformation"), written in 1832. It is one of the great symphonic masterpieces of the early Romantic era. The fourth movement is based on the famous chorale "Ein feste Burg"
composed by 16th century reformist Martin Luther. The program will also feature Professor Emeritus Estela Olevsky as she performs Frdric Chopin's Piano Concerto no. 1 in E minor, composed in 1830. This concerto contains both impressive virtuousic playing as well as beautiful lyricism in the bel canto style of the time.
Both pieces will be performed by the University Orchestra and conducted by Professor Lanfranco Marcelletti, whose passion and energy make for an incredible listening experience. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to hear two orchestral masterpieces performed by an orchestra of talented musicians who have come from all over the world to study at UMass. Tickets are $5 for students with a valid ID, $10 for the general public, and are available at the Fine Arts Center Box Office.

Monday, November 29, 2004
John J. McCarthy, Professor of Linguistics "Pahk Your Cah in Hahvahd Yahd:
A Biography of the Boston Dialect"
What are the distinctive properties of this Eastern Massachusetts dialect, heard all over campus? Professor McCarthy, himself a speaker, will describe what is known about its history, geography, and demography, and test conclusions with data collected by students in Linguistics 101. He'll also use the famous r sound to show how speakers have a sophisticated, unconscious knowledge of linguistic structures and rules, and what this and other properties of the Boston accent reveal about how language is represented in the human mind.
