FICTION READING BY DAVID OHLE, NOV 3
The Visiting Writers Series at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is pleased to announce a reading by novelist David Ohle on Thursday, November 3, at 8 PM in Memorial Hall. A Q&A session with the author will be held the following day, November 4, at 10:30 AM, at the Jones Library in Amherst.
David Ohle’s first novel, "Motorman," was published by Knopf in 1972 and reprinted by 3rd Bed in 2004 with an Introduction by Ben Marcus. Its sequel, "The Age of Sinatra," was published by Soft Skull in 2004. His short fiction has appeared in Harper’s, Esquire, Paris Review and elsewhere. He edited the non-fiction book, "Cows are Freaky When they Look at You: An Oral History of the Kaw Valley Hemp Pickers" (Watermark Press, 1991) and the forthcoming (from Soft Skull) memoir, "Cursed From Birth: The Short, Unhappy Life of William Burroughs Jr." He is a native of New Orleans, now living in Lawrence, Kansas, and teaching at the University of Kansas.
A reception and book-signing will follow the reading. All events are free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible. Visiting Writers Series events are sponsored by the MFA Program for Poets and Writers and made possible in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the UMass Arts Council, and the UMass Alumni Association.
REPRESENT UMASS AMHERST AT YOUR HOMETOWN HIGH
RESPOND BY NOVEMBER 4
A program called Hometown High is among the several projects UMass coordinates each semester. Through this program, the Admissions Office recruits and trains current UMass students to return to their high schools to talk about college life as well as to speak about the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
If you are interested in representing UMass to your Hometown High, complete the application form and return it by Friday, November 4, 2005. Each volunteer must attend a one and one half hour training session. There are five sessions to choose from, all held during the weeks of November 6 and 14, 2005. We will communicate this information to you as soon as we receive your interest form. Also, each of our volunteers will receive a token of our appreciation for their service. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact Sarah Coty at 5-6006 or scoty@acad.umass.edu, or Jill Murtagh at jmurtagh@educ.umass.edu. For more information, click here.
