DISTINGUISHED FACULTY LECTURE Wednesday, October 20, 2004 Sheldon Goldman, Professor of Political Science "Judicial Confirmations: The New Battle Zone in American Politics" Where: Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center When: 4:00 p.m. A reception follows immediately after the lecture. Open to the public

Judicial nominees to the lower federal courts face increasing hostility on the path to confirmation. Obstruction and delays have grown in the past 25 years, a trend Professor Goldman will illuminate using papers from presidential libraries and his own statistics. He'll also look at the underlying causes-the use of litmus tests, the ideological polarization of party elites and of the U.S. Senate as a whole, and the growing involvement of interest and advocacy groups in the selection and confirmation processes-and will speculate on what impact these lower-court controversies are likely to have on future Supreme Court appointments.

CITYREACH ANNUAL OUTREACH PROGRAM

Dear Commonwealth College Student,

You are invited to be part of a unique overnight experience next Friday, October 22. As an aspect of the service learning course, "Homelessness and Shelter," students will be traveling to Boston to participate in the "City Reach" program run by a Christian community comprised of homeless people in the city.

"Common Cathedral" offers its College CityReach program once a year -- an overnight urban outreach opportunity for college students of any denomination. Participants begin the program at 7 pm on Friday evening, are taught by currently homeless teachers, and walk through the city guided by members of the community. Students will sleep in St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, and on Saturday morning from the Cathedral steps, offer clothing that has been collected, and simple meals will be provided.

There will be structured times for reflection with other students and with homeless members themselves.

This year, CityReach is pleased to welcome Dr. David Hilfiker, MD, as its Friday evening speaker. Dr. Hilfiker spent his medical career as a physician with low-income people in rural Minnesota and inner-city Washington, DC. In Washington, he and his family lived for five years in a thirty-four-bed medical recovery shelter for homeless men, and in 1990, founded Joseph's House, an eleven-bed home and community for formerly homeless men with AIDS, where he and his family lived for three years.

The trip will depart from Robsham Visitor's Center at 4 pm on Friday, October 22nd, and return by 6 pm on Saturday, October 23. The cost is $25, and participants should bring with them money for one lunch and one dinner. Scholarships are available. For more information, or to register, contact Dr. Kent Higgins at kh@som.umass.edu.
