An Orientation to prestigious scholarships such as the Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, and Fulbright, as well as a brief summary of graduate programs in the U.K. and Ireland. 5-COLLEGE COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING/CSL WORKSHOP, OCT 20
The Five Colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst) will host the Community-Based Learning and Community Service Workshop on Thursday, October 20 from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm at UMass. Students who are new to the Pioneer Valley and seeking opportunities for civic engagement, as well as students who are experienced in both areas, are invited. Check-in begins at 6:00 pm in the atrium of the Goodell Building. Activities begin promptly at 6:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS SHOWING OUTDOORS, OCT 20
On Thursday, October 20, Commonwealth College will be showing EDWARD SCISSORHANDS as a part of our C3 (Commonwealth College Community) Events. The movie will be showing outside by the campus pond at 7:30 pm. We will be serving hot chocolate, cider and snacks. Bring a blanket!

MAJORS FAIR, NOV 2
Pre-Major Advising Services, Commonwealth College and Career Services will co-sponsor a Majors Fair that will take place on Wednesday, November 2 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. All current and prospective students are cordially invited to attend. The event will provide an opportunity for undeclared students to explore potential areas of study while allowing current majors to learn about other options they may not know exist at the University. Don’t miss this once-a-year chance to explore the impressive array of majors and resources available at UMass! Representatives from over 90 different departments will be present to answer questions and provide literature on major requirements and opportunities. Light refreshments provided by the Career Services will make the occasion both festive and informative.

WINTER COURSE IN MEXICO - HONORS 397I

With Professor John Gerber
This new 4-credit January-term course, "Participatory Leadership: Consensus, Conflict and Community" or less formally known as "Leadership for Social Change," will take place in an Ecovillage called Huehuecoyotl in the Volcano Belt of central Mexico. You will join other students in learning together how to do the important work of healing ourselves, our institutions and maybe the planet. WRITERS WORK WITH TREE SWENSON, OCT 17

As Executive Director of one of the most prestigious and influential literary organizations in the nation, Tree Swenson plays a crucial role in the life of poetry in our culture, overseeing educational, outreach, publishing, awards, and advocacy programs including “April Is Poetry Month.” Tree’s background in the literary arts includes serving as publisher and executive director of Copper Canyon Press, which she co-founded in 1973, and as director of programs for the Massachusetts Cultural Council, where she oversaw grants in all arts disciplines for organizations, artists, schools, and communities. Join us as Tree discusses her experience in publishing, arts advocacy, and administration, and her work to promote an understanding of poetry and literature as essential. HOMECOMING BONFIRE AND PEP RALLY, OCT 13
Homecoming 2005 is almost here... come support your Minutemen!   We've set up a Homecoming Bonfire and Pep Rally at the Campus Pond on Thursday, October 13th.  Festivities start at 8!  We also have a MinuteMic Talent Contest--sign ups start October 5th in the campus center.  The contest will be held at the Bluewall on Thursday, October 13th, at 10 pm, following the bonfire.  Come watch friends and strangers face off for a fabulous prize and bragging rights as the most talented Minuteman!  You vote on who wins.  Also, come by the campus center to buy tickets to our raffle--prizes include an iPod nano, and over 20 gift certificates from Panera, Elegant Nails, Western Mass Family Gold, Subway, Bueno y Sano, Antonio's, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

KNOWLEDGE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE DINNER, OCT 19

This actual dinner will lead students through the potential pitfalls of a business dinner with various “dangerous” foods. Carol McGuiggan, an etiquette professional, will show how to navigate a formal dinner place setting, meal etiquette and answer questions. $7.00 per person.
