5-COLLEGE COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING/CSL WORKSHOP, OCT 20
The Five Colleges (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst) will host the Community-Based Learning and Community Service Workshop on Thursday, October 20 from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm at UMass. Students who are new to the Pioneer Valley and seeking opportunities for civic engagement, as well as students who are experienced in both areas, are invited. Check-in begins at 6:00 pm in the atrium of the Goodell Building. Activities begin promptly at 6:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. TUTORS SOUGHT FOR AFRICAN HERITAGE STUDENTS
A group of parents of African heritage in our community have established an organization called AIMS (Academic and other Initiatives for Maximum Success). The principal goal of this group is to provide academic and social support for elementary and secondary school African heritage students. About 20 families have expressed interest, and 18 students have signed up for tutoring. AIMS hopes to find college students of African heritage to work with these kids. If you are interested and would like more information, contact Shirley (256 8539) or Lucy (253 9796) or Desiree (549 4290). For an application form, please come by the Office of Community Service Learning (610 Goodell).

All nominations must include your name, mailing address, email address and signature.

WINTER COURSE IN MEXICO - HONORS 397I
With Professor John Gerber
This new 4-credit January-term course, "Participatory Leadership: Consensus, Conflict and Community" or less formally known as "Leadership for Social Change," will take place in an Ecovillage called Huehuecoyotl in the Volcano Belt of central Mexico. You will join other students in learning together how to do the important work of healing ourselves, our institutions and maybe the planet. RESEARCH ASSISTANT SOUGHT
Faculty member in the department of Afro-American Studies seeks highly computer-literate student to do searches relating to American poetry in the Chadwyck-Healey Database of 20th Century American Poetry. This database can be accessed from the library at Smith College, so the work must be done at the Smith campus library. I will provide a list of keywords to be searched in the database, and the assistant will search these terms and provide an accounting of where the words occurred in twentieth century American poetry included in the database. Searches outside this particular database may be possible or necessary as well. Knowledge of American literature a strong plus, as is a familiarity with blues music. Contact Professor Steven C. GEORGE SAUDERS READING, OCT 6
The Visiting Writers Series is pleased to announce a fiction reading by George Saunders on Thursday, October 6, at 8 PM in Memorial Hall. A Q&A session with the author will be held the following day, October 7, at 10:30 AM at the Jones Library in Amherst. George Sauders is the acclaimed author of Pastoralia (2000) and CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, both of which were New York Times Notable Books, and The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil (Riverhead, 2005). His work, which has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, and Story, has received two National Magazine Awards and three times been included in O.Henry Awards collections. He has explored for oil in Sumatra, played guitar in a Texas bar band, and worked in a slaughterhouse. He teaches at Syracuse University. A reception and book-signing will follow each reading. All events are free and open to the public.

Homecoming 2005 is almost here... come support your Minutemen! We've set up a Homecoming Bonfire and Pep Rally at the Campus Pond on Thursday, October 13th. Festivities start at 8! We also have a MinuteMic Talent Contest--sign ups start October 5th in the campus center. The contest will be held at the Bluewall on Thursday, October 13th, at 10 pm, following the bonfire. Come watch friends and strangers face off for a fabulous prize and bragging rights as the most talented Minuteman! You vote on who wins.
