FALL FILM SERIES - SUICIDE KILLERS, OCT 4

A documentary study of suicide bombers presented through interviews with family members as well as prisoners whose bombing efforts have been thwarted. This is the second in this fall's Understanding Terrorism film series.
   Film Series showings take place Thursdays at 8:00pm in 504 Goodell. Films are free and open to all Commonwealth College members and their friends. Refreshments provided!

AUTHOR JESSICA STERN TO SPEAK, OCT 15
Jessica Stern, author of Terror in the Name of God, will speak to students and faculty on Monday, October 15, at 7:00pm in Bowker Auditorium. Dr. Stern's presentation will be followed by questions from the audience. The event is sponsored by Commonwealth College and the Dean's Book Course.

The Distinguished Teaching Award is the highest recognition of teaching awarded to faculty members and teaching assistants/associates. To nominate your favorite professor or TA, all you need to do is tell us why your nominee should receive a Distinguished Teaching Award. All nominations must include your name, mailing address, and email address. Only current and former students may nominate faculty members. Teaching assistants/associates may be nominated by faculty members or current and former students.

UNDERSTANDING TERRORISM SYMPOSIUM ADDRESSES CRITICAL ISSUES
Four faculty members from across the disciplines addressed issues raised by Jessica Stern's Terror in the Name of God at the Oct 2nd Understanding Terrorism Symposium sponsored by Commonwealth College. The four faculty panelists spoke to some 125 students, faculty and friends of the Dean's Book Course, and then took questions from the audience. Panelists and their presentations included Dr. Carlin Barton, History, "The Character of Martyrdom"; Dr. Jay Demerath, Sociology, “The Sociology of World Religions and Worldly Politics”; Dr. Anurag Sharma, ISOM, “Reflections on Organization of Violence”; and Dr. Yehudit Heller, Commonwealth College, “Living Daily with Terrorism.”

VISITING WRITER JOANNA SCOTT, OCT 4
The Visiting Writers Series at UMass Amherst invites you to a reading by Joanna Scott — author of seven novels and two short-fiction collections — on Thursday, October 4, at 8 pm in The University Gallery, Fine Arts Center. Events are sponsored by the MFA Program, Juniper Initiative, UMass Arts Council, the UMass Alumni Association, Vice Provost of Research, The English Department, and The Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts. They are free and open to the public.

IN CONVERSATION WITH TONY KUSHNER, OCT 9
Rand Theater, Fine Arts Center, at 7:00pm
This will be a rare public appearance for the iconic playwright, best known for his landmark play on the politics of AIDS, Angels in America, and more recently the Oscar-nominated screenplay to Steven Spielberg's controversial film, Munich. Kushner will engage in a dialogue with UMass theater professor and dramaturg Paul Walsh, discussing his dramatic work and a wide array of social and political issues ranging from AIDS and race relations to the Holocaust and Middle Eastern politics. Audience members will also have an opportunity to ask questions. Co-presented by the Theater Department, Stonewall Center, and Office of Jewish Affairs. More information here.

JUBILAT/JONES POETRY SWAP, OCT 14
The poetry swap will take place at 2:00 pm in the Jones Library, Amity Street, Amherst. Bring a poem you would like to share and discuss. The swap will be followed by a 3:00 reading by poets Matthew Rohrer and James Tate. Free swaps and readings are sponsored by Friends of the Jones Library, Amherst Cultural Council, jubilat and the Juniper Initiative of the UMass MFA Program.
