COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE NOTICES

COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE WELCOMES A NEW DEAN

On September 1, Commonwealth College welcomed Professor Priscilla Clarkson as its new dean, replacing former dean Dr. Linda Slakey, who officially retired the same day. Dean Clarkson, herself a graduate of UMass Amherst (B.S. '69, Ph.D. '77), is from the Department of Kinesiology and has most recently been Associate Dean for Research in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences.

DEAN'S BOOK COURSE CLASSES BEGIN WEEK OF SEPT 11

That's the first full week of classes. Students must attend the first class meeting in order to remain enrolled. Students wishing to join a DBC section may attend the first class meeting: If there's a no-show on the roster, a present student may fill the slot. Get a head start and begin reading The Aquariums of Pyongyang now. For more information about this semester's book and complete information about the course, see the DBC website.

NEW HONORS STUDY! EARN CREDIT AND HELP COM COL ASSESS CURRICULUM - HONORS 397Z, 1 CREDIT

Commonwealth College students within a range of majors and colleges are needed to take part in a one-credit per semester study designed to assess work assigned and completed within their classes. This study is part of an effort to assess the effectiveness of the honors curriculum, and is open to any student within Commonwealth College, as long as the student is taking honors-level courses during the academic year 2006-2007, is available to attend four class meetings each semester on Wednesday nights, and is also organized and able to collect and catalog all of their work in the other classes they are taking throughout the semester, including class activities and assignments. Class size will be limited to 25 students. Because the participation of students from a variety of majors and colleges is needed, filling out and submitting an application does not guarantee entry into the study. To learn more, view the study syllabus.

COMMUNITY SERVICE FAIR, SEPT 14

11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Community leaders from across the Pioneer Valley will converge at the Student Union Ballroom for the Fall Community Service Fair. The event, sponsored by the UMass Office of Community Service Learning at Commonwealth College, seeks to connect students, faculty, and community organizations to promote exciting community service opportunities throughout the local area.
More than 60 community agencies, representing human services, the environment, law/advocacy, government, and arts and culture, will be on hand to discuss volunteer and internship opportunities. The event is designed to provide resources for both the community and the campus. The Community Service Fair will offer students a chance to establish placements for their community service learning courses, and will highlight volunteer opportunities for all campus members. In addition, the Fair is a chance for faculty interested in developing a community service learning component in their courses to talk with representatives from non-profit agencies about possible partnerships. University employees interested in volunteering or learning about services provided by local organizations are also encouraged to attend.
