STUDENTS PRESENT RESEARCH SURROUNDING SWINE FLU
The 2009 Undergraduate Research Conference, sponsored by Commonwealth College, boasted more than 500 undergraduate students presenting their research findings here at UMass Amherst. Students from 17 schools participated in the conference which was held May 1st at the Lincoln Campus Center. Three students from Commonwealth College had presentations surrounding the H1N1 virus commonly referred to as “swine flu”.
Michael Schneider ’09, Rebecca Mushlin ’09 and Sumathi Narayana, ’09, presented their research-based findings involving the H1N1 virus. The topic proved timely as the first cases of the virus reported in Amherst occurred on the day of the conference. Each of the students was enrolled in assistant professor Martha Yoder’s capstone course entitled “Health and Sickness in America: Historical and Cross-Cultural Perspectives.”
