COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE NOTICES

NEW HONORS STUDY! EARN CREDIT AND HELP COM COL ASSESS CURRICULUM - HONORS 397Z, 1 CREDIT

Commonwealth College students within a range of majors and colleges are needed to take part in a one-credit per semester study designed to assess work assigned and completed within their classes. This study is part of an effort to assess the effectiveness of the honors curriculum, and is open to any student within Commonwealth College, as long as the student is taking honors-level courses during the academic year 2006-2007, is available to attend four class meetings each semester on Wednesday nights, and is also organized and able to collect and catalog all of their work in the other classes they are taking throughout the semester, including class activities and assignments. Class size will be limited to 25 students. Because the participation of students from a variety of majors and colleges is needed, filling out and submitting an application does not guarantee entry into the study. Submit application (available here online) by May 10, 2006, at 4 PM.

Super Size Me [2004]: Why are Americans so fat? Find out in Super Size Me, a tongue in-cheek -- and burger in hand -- look at the legal, financial and physical costs of America's hunger for fast food. Ominously, 37% of American children and adolescents are carrying too much fat and 2 out of every three adults are overweight or obese. Is it our fault for lacking self-control, or are the fast-food corporations to blame? Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock hit the road and interviewed experts in 20 U.S. cities, including Houston, the "Fattest City" in America. From Surgeon Generals to gym teachers, cooks to kids, lawmakers to legislators, these authorities shared their research, opinions and "gut feelings" on our ever-expanding girth.
