MOVIE NIGHT: CITY OF GOD (BRAZIL), MAR 29

Two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro take different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer (IMDB).
    Showings take place Thursdays at 8:00pm in 504 Goodell. Films are free and open to all Commonwealth College members and their friends. Refreshments provided!

CAREERS IN LAW: 8 MINUTE NETWORKING WITH ALUMNI ATTORNEYS, APR 12

On April 12th from 5:30 - 7:30 in Memorial Hall, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Commonwealth College will be hosting "Careers in Law: 8 Minute Networking." Numerous UMass Amherst alumni, who are practicing attorneys (or currently in law school) in diverse fields, will be on campus to network with students. To maximize the opportunity for individual connections, the format will be similar to that of "speed-dating." Groups of students will meet with an attorney for 8-10 minutes to hear what they do and then move on to the next one, and so on. Following this part of the program, students will be able to meet informally with any of these alumni over pizza.

COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE DEAN PRISCILLA CLARKSON NAMED DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR

Priscilla Clarkson, professor of Kinesiology and interim dean of Commonwealth College, has been appointed a Distinguished Professor by President Jack Wilson. The appointment was approved March 14 by the Board of Trustees. Clarkson was recommended for the honor by Chancellor John V. Lombardi and Charlena Seymour, provost and senior vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, who called her “an international leader” in the areas of exercise-induced muscle damage and repair and the genetics underpinnings of muscle growth and atrophy. The chancellor and provost also praised her as an “excellent role model for both students and faculty” and her service to her profession. To view the full article see "In The Loop".

CAPSTONE: CSL COORDINATOR FOR THE DBC

Looking for a way to complete your capstone and give back to the community? Apply for the Dean’s Book Community Service Learning Coordinator Position! This position is a year long commitment (spring 2007-fall 2007) in which the coordinator works closely with students, community based organizations, the Office of Community Service Learning, and a course instructor to provide service placements and lead discussions for students enrolled in the CSL Dean’s Book course. The position will provide the six credits needed to fulfill the Capstone requirement and also a small stipend. Applications can be picked up at the CSL Office located at 610 Goodell. THE UMASS CITIZENS SCHOLARS PROGRAM, MAR 30 DEADLINE

The Citizen Scholars Program (CSP) offers you an environment in which to think critically about social issues and act creatively to produce change.
   Each Citizen Scholar receives $1,000 each program year and is eligible for funds to support summer internships with non-profit or public policy organizations. Students are recognized with the Citizen Scholars medal upon graduation from the program. For more information visit the OCSL website or view this pdf.

SPONSORED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES (REU)

Each summer the University of Massachusetts campus hosts several REU programs—Research Experience for Undergraduates—in a wide range of subject areas. The programs are sponsored by institutions like the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Foundation, and the UMass Office of the Provost.
    The UMass Office of Research Affairs website provides a list of programs scheduled for Summer 2007. Subject matter, stipends, schedules, and application details can be found at the websites listed. There may also be REU opportunities for individuals in other labs. COMCOL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE, APPLY BY MARCH 27

Commonwealth College alumni have endowed a variety of scholarships and awards. Selection criteria for most of these scholarships combine financial need and academic merit, and many of the senior awards consider service to the community as well as academic excellence. Applications for Commonwealth College scholarships must be submitted by March 27. For some scholarships, such as Hoff, students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal government, postmarked by February 15.

Middlebury College is pleased to announce the Kathryn Wasserman Davis Scholarships in Critical Language Study. These scholarships will cover the full cost of a summer language study from beginner to graduate in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian at the Middlebury College Language Schools during the summer of 2007. SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT THE STATE HOUSE

Representative Denise Provost (D-Somerville) is looking for candidates who are interested in an internship at the Massachusetts State House for June-August, 2007. An internship with Representative Provost's office will provide exposure to state government and an opportunity to research and write about legislation. Interns will contribute to administrative office projects including: data entry, mailings, and filing.
    Interested candidates should submit their application to Elizabeth Monnin–Browder (elizabeth.monnin@state.ma.us) with the subject line “Summer Internship Application.” Your application should include: a cover letter, short writing sample (no more than 3 pages), and resume. In your cover letter, please be explicit about your availability including: available start and end date, which days you are available and for how many hours each day, and how many hours total you can commit each week. At minimum, candidates should be able to commit to at least 5 hours a week.
