COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING DEAN’S BOOK COURSES OPEN
This spring, Commonwealth College will offer two Dean's Book Courses with a Community Service Learning component: Honors 291R and Honors 391S. Each covers two levels of the DBC, carries 3 credits, and meets for the full semester.
Honors 291R covers both Honors 191D and 291D; Honors 391S covers Honors 291D and 391D.
Students read two books -- the text chosen for regular DBC sections and a second book, chosen by the instructor. In addition to the Dean’s Book Course curriculum, students complete 20 hours of community service in local organizations devoted to real-life issues raised in the text. In class, time is given to reflecting upon the service performed and discussing how it relates to the books.
Honors 291R is open to second-semester freshmen and above, and meets TH 4:00-6:00pm with instructor Carol Soules.
Honors 391S is open to juniors and seniors, and meets TU 7:00-9:00pm with instructor Nicole Nemec.
Register through the Office of Community Service Learning in 610 Goodell (tel. 545-2015). Or download and complete the application form, and return it by email to servelearn@acad.umass.edu.
VIDEO DEAN’S BOOK COURSE, HONORS 391V
Commonwealth College introduces this spring a new course -- Video DBC -- that combines the final level of the Dean's Book Course with an introduction to the elements of documentary film production. Video DBC follows the regular Honors 391D curriculum but with an emphasis on documentary film projects. Students learn the foundations of video/film technique and theory necessary to produce their own short subject documentaries on topics related to the semester's text and arising out of their class-based research.
This is a special three-credit section of the Dean's Book Course, which meets 2 hours a week for the full semester and also for three separate 5-hour Saturday video field production workshops. Prerequisites are Honors 191D and 291D or Honors 291G. No previous film/video courses are required and all levels of experience are welcome.
Join and learn the how to place your views on the screen by stepping behind the camera. Meets Wed 10:10-12:05 and for three Saturday production sessions. Instructor: Adrian d’Errico, Producer, Lucid Production, Montague, MA. Register on Spire.
