WEEKLY WEDNESDAY WORKSHOP

Monday, February 2nd, 2009: “More Bang for Your Buck”: Commonwealth College scholarships and some national scholarship information. The presentation is from 6-7:00 p.m. and dinner from the Loose Goose Café is provided.  The workshop will take place in the lounge outside of room 504 Goodell. Please RSVP no later than Friday, January 30th by 4:00 p.m. if you would like to attend this workshop.

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009: ?Summer Internships and Resume Writing?: Join with Career Services and get guidance on resume writing and preparing for a Summer Internship. Tuesday February 3, 2009: ?Tell Me Your Story: Digital Storytelling for Community Health Action Research,? Dr. Aline Gubrium, Assistant Professor, Community Health Education, and Dr. Gloria DiFulvio, Assistant Professor of Commonwealth College will present.
   This Tuesday Dr. Gubrium and Dr. DiFulvio will discuss the use of an emergent technology in community health research and practice, digital storytelling. Digital stories are three-minute visual narratives that synthesize images, video, audio recordings of voice and music, and text to create compelling stories. This method of recording narratives serves as a model of participatory- action research?using digital stories to strengthen communities and their indigenous abilities to address local community problems. Emily Alling, librarian for Commonwealth College, will be in the ComCol Lounge for one hour per week from 12:00 ? 1:00 p.m. Stop by with any research you might be working on, or just to say hi and learn more about what the Libraries have to offer. OXFORD SUMMER SEMINAR INFO
While it is true that our economy is still suffering, it is safe to say that things are even worse in the UK. And while I do have some small sympathy for the Brits, I also feel compelled to point out that there is really no better time to go to England than this year. Flights are cheap, the exchange rate is fantastic, and we have recently reduced the price for the upcoming Oxford Summer Seminar. More Information.


SENIOR LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Senior Leadership Award recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the UMass Amherst community. Award recipients have distinguished themselves through important contributions to student organizations and campus jobs, through academic excellence, and through public and community service. The following scholarships are available through the UMASS Alumni Association.
Leaders in the Making Scholarship
Four $2,000 scholarships given to promising sophomores and juniors with diverse records of achievement in academics and volunteerism.
Life Member Scholarship for Internships
Two $2,000 scholarships given to exceptional sophomores or juniors to help defray the cost of a summer, unpaid, away-from-home internship.
Michael W. Morris Scholarship
One $2,000 scholarship given to a student from Lawrence or Lowell, MA. The scholarship is in honor of Lawrence native and longtime UMass Amherst champion, Michael W. Morris ?63.

GOVERNOR'S INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2009!
The Governor?s Office is now accepting applications for internships for Summer and Fall 2009. In order to schedule all personal interviews for the fall prior to summer vacation, all potential applicants should be conscious of their schedules and summer departure dates as the end of the semester approaches. Do want to contribute to the community while fulfilling a ComCol requirement? Consider applying for a CSL Dean?s Book course! 291R is open to freshmen and above; 391S is for juniors and seniors. These three-credit courses combine two levels of Dean?s Book with an 18-hour community service component in the city of Holyoke. More Information.

SEE THEATRE AND STUDY ABROAD IN SCOTLAND THIS SUMMER
Want to study abroad, but can?t find time during the school year? The English Department now offers a unique two-week, 3-credit study abroad course in Edinburgh, Scotland. Students of English 397D, Alternative Theatres, will attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest theatre festival in the world, stay in centrally located apartments, and tour the city of Edinburgh and the Scottish highlands.
