NEW HONORS FEE INFORMATION
The University of Massachusetts has established a new Commonwealth College Honors fee which will be used to continue providing an exceptional learning experience for students. It will help fund additional faculty, maintain small classes, and provide the experiences which distinguish the College, such as visiting authors and other special programs. We are continuing to provide this level of educational experience in spite of the cuts in state funding that necessitated this fee. The University is committed to continuing the academic quality of Commonwealth Honors College.
Additional information on campus fees can be found on this document from the Bursar's Office:
http://www.umass.edu/bursar/fee_explanation.pdf.

CAPTURING STORIES FOR COMMUNITY 2010-2011 CAPSTONE
Are you interested in volunteering in a local community organization and gathering oral histories of community residents? You can do this as your Capstone project in Capturing Stories for Community.
In this two semester 6-credit Capstone course, students will learn about theories of community development including social capital, asset-based community building, and civic engagement
Additionally, students will learn qualitative inquiry more broadly with specific emphasis on the oral history and life story methodology. Course discussion will focus on how social capital shapes our everyday life and how social ties can lead to community involvement.
The collection of oral histories provides a way for students to:
gain experience in qualitative data collection
explore a question related to the course content directly with participants
deepen their learning by making connections between service, the stories and existing knowledge and theory
Limited capacity. Apply early by emailing Gloria DiFulvio at gloria@honors.umass.edu.

NEED TO WRITE A SENIOR HONORS THESIS - LOOKING FOR A CAPSTONE COURSE?
If so,” Historic and Contemporary Issues of American Indians and Tribes: History, Policy, and Law” – a 6-credit year-long capstone course – has a few remaining openings.
This course will begin with a look at American Indians from the time they first discovered Europeans. We will continue with a detailed consideration of the history of federal Indian policy in the U.S. and its impact on tribes and individual Indians. Federal Indian policy and law are continually evolving and generally represent contemporary attitudes toward Indians as well as the political agendas of those in office and on the Supreme Court.
   Honors 499C, section 5 meets Mon/Wed/Fri from 11:15 to 12:05.
This course is open to Commonwealth Honors College seniors only. To inquire about permission to enroll, contact Professor Kathleen Brown-Pιrez at brown-perez@honors.umass.edu.
