Dean's Book Course Model Presentations
Oral presentation is emphasized at every level of the Dean's Book Course, and at each of the three levels students practice a different presentation style. Our goal is for students to leave the DBC with the skill and confidence to present successfully in any academic or professional venue.
5-Minute Poster Presentations for DBC 191
In level I of the Dean's Book Course, students research a topic related to the semester's text and present their findings in a 5-minute oral presentation. They are encouraged to support their talk with a modest posterboard display--a simple version of posters commonly presented at the annual Undergraduate Research Conference--visually representing four or five key points in words and images, tables, graphs, maps, etc. [View online video]
Paper Presentations for DBC 291
In level II of the Dean's Book Course, students compose a paper intended for delivery to a listening audience. Students are expected to polish and practice reading their papers enough that their presentations have the audience appeal of a speech, sermon, or other form of public address, not simply a literal reading. For their second course assignment, students expand their delivered papers into ones suitable for print publication. [View online video]
10-Minute Presentations for DBC 391
In level III of the Dean's Book Course, students may produce a written text or a material/musical artifact as their final project. The presentation of their projects is expected to be longer than previous presentations and more sophisticated in form, supported often by a PowerPoint display or other audio-visual device.
