Semester-Long Dean's Book Course

two book jackets

For transfer students and UMass Amherst students who join Commonwealth College in either the junior or senior year, the Dean's Book Course offers special semester-long sections. These sections -- known as "G" sections -- comprise two Dean's Book Course levels and carry two credits. They are offered during the regular academic year only, both fall and spring semesters.

The "G" Sections

Honors 291G covers both 191D and 291D and follows sequentially the curriculum for each of those two DBC levels. In the first half of the term, students read the general Dean's Book Course text selection. A text for the second half of the term is chosen by the instructor. (Schedule)

Honors 391G covers the second two levels of the Dean's Book Course (291D and 391D), follows the curricula of those levels, and, like 291G, centers on the general text selection as well as a second text of the instructor's choosing. Honors 191D is a prerequisite to Honors 391G. (Schedule)

Registration for "G" Sections

Registration for "G" sections is done through the Commonwealth College office. Students wishing to enroll should see an advisor and complete a priority enrollment form (download form). Priority is given to students facing the greatest time constraints or other academic demands that prevent them from completing the normal Dean's Book Course sequence.
