Joining Commonwealth College as a Current UMass Amherst Student

Admission to Commonwealth College is highly competitive and space is limited.  Although you may apply based upon the minimum requirements noted below, students with a cumulative GPA of 3.800 or higher in their UMass Amherst coursework, and thoughtful responses to our essay questions, will be given first priority. (Note: in our most recent application cycle the majority of admitted students had GPAs of 3.800 or higher.)

Minimum criteria for application:

  • currently enrolled at UMass Amherst,
  • a cumulative GPA of 3.200 or higher (graduating Classes of 2009-2012) or 3.400 or higher (graduating Classes of 2013 onward) in UMass Amherst coursework,
  • a most recent semester GPA of 3.200 or higher (Classes of 2009-2012) or 3.400 or higher (Classes of 2013 onward) in UMass Amherst coursework,
  • the ability to complete a minimum of 45 graded credits (not pass/fail) here at UMass Amherst (vs. transfer credit), and
  • interest in advanced academic work, including an honors thesis or project
