Fulbright Grants

Fulbright Grants support graduate study and research in over 100 foreign countries. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens who will hold at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent prior to undertaking the grant and are available to go overseas for the academic year for a minimum of six months. Fulbright Full Grants differ by country in the amount of funding awarded, but most provide round-trip transportation, language or orientation courses (where appropriate), tuition, books, maintenance for one academic year, and limited health and accident insurance.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application. 
  2. There is no minimum GPA required for application, although a 3.5 is recommended to be competitive.  
  3. Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was received primarily at educational institutions in the United States. 
  4. Foreign study during the junior year or other periods of undergraduate study that are integral parts of the curricula of American institutions will not be considered disqualifying. 
  5. Preference will usually be given to candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. 
  6. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section. 
  7. Applicants must hold a B.A. degree or the equivalent before the beginning date of the grant. 
  8. Applicants may not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application, unless otherwise noted.

Application Process

  1. Eligible students should fill out the ONSA internal application . Please email questions to ONSA@honors.umass.edu  or call to set up an appointment.
  2. Submit applications and accompanying materials, including references and foreign language report by September 11 , 2009 to ONSA.
  3. A campus interview will be arranged for each applicant in first week of October 2009. A faculty committee will review applications before the interview. Part of the interview may be conducted in the appropriate foreign language.
  4. Following the campus interview, an evaluation is prepared by the committee and all application materials and accompanying items are sent to IIE.

Applications are reviewed by IIE in November and December and applicants are notified of their status in January. Those recommended will be notified of their final results between March and June. Notification comes directly from IIE.
