The Commonwealth College Reading & Research Seminar: The Dean's Book Course

Finding Connections, Making a Difference

image of student studyingAt the heart of Commonwealth College's mission is the belief that education should be broad as well as deep. It should lead us beyond our chosen discipline and into dialogue with colleagues from academic areas outside our own. In the connections we find among differences new knowledge grows. At the heart of Commonwealth College's mission is a second, related belief that truly educated citizens are distinguished not by individual achievement alone but by their engagement in the communities they inhabit.

How the Dean's Book Course Fits Our Mission

Required of all Commonwealth College members, the DBC seminar series furthers the College's mission by providing a cross-disciplinary course in which students from a range of majors come together to teach and learn from one another. Through research and presentation, discussion and debate, each derives a greater understanding of the book and the issues it raises than reading from one limited perspective alone could have produced.

How the Dean's Book Course Fits Our Curriculum

The DBC seminar series prepares students for the demands they will face in the Capstone Experience and all future study. Specifically, it provides training in the research practices and presentation techniques—both oral and written—required in a capstone project or thesis defense and featured in undergraduate as well as professional research conferences.
