Students

"Everyone can be great because anyone can serve."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Every semester, over one thousand UMass Amherst students engage in community service learning.  Through service-learning, students apply what they are learning in the classroom to their work with community organizations.  In turn, their experience supporting communities helps to inform their studies.

Like these students, you may become involved in service at some point during your college career.  You may do service for credit in a course, as part of a fraternity/sorority or religious group, through a Federal Work-Study job, or just on your own.  If you're considering doing service, this section of our website is just for you!

There's a myriad of ways to get involved in service in Amherst and the surrounding areas, so we have compiled some tools and tips to help you get started.  You will find a list of courses (from all Five Colleges) that take you out of the classroom and into the community.  You can find service opportunities, learn how to get a community service work-study job and find out more about our student programs.  To get a periodic (biweekly) newsletter with announcements about scholarships, conferences and other student-focused opportunities, sign up for the UMass Serves! e-newsletter.

If you'd rather just talk to a person, the staff at the Office of Community Service Learning is available to help you maneuver through this process every weekday from 9am to 5pm.  Come in, call us at (413) 545-2015 or send us an email and we'll do our best to answer your questions and help you get involved!
