CSL DEAN'S BOOK
Honors 391S
3 Credits

Course Meeting Time
Fall 2008
Wednesday, 5:00-7:55pm

Course Description
Dean's Book Course texts are chosen, in part, for the issues they raise: issues about education, economics, racial identity, religious tolerance, etc. Relevant issues become the subject of discussion, research, and other coursework.

CSL sections of the Dean's Book Course connect coursework to community service. In addition to the standard Dean's Book Course curriculum, students complete about 20 hours of community service with local organizations in Holyoke, Massachusetts devoted to real-life issues raised in the text. In class, time is given to reflecting upon the service performed and discussing how it relates to the books.

In addition, in the CSL sections, students read two books: the text chosen for regular Dean's Book sections and a second book chosen by the instructor. Honors 391S fulfills the second two levels of the Dean's Book Course (Honors 291D and 391D) and follows the curricula for those two levels. This section is open to students with junior or senior status. Sophomores eager to take the 391S course are also welcome to apply and may be admitted with the instructor's permission.
