Service Details
In addition to the scheduled class time(s), each student is required to engage in community service at one of the partnering community based organizations. You must reserve one weekday afternoon per week (M-F, 2:30pm-5:30pm including transportation time) for 10 weeks.

All service sites are in Holyoke, MA. Collectively, students arrange transportation via carpooling.

Course Description
Honors Seminar texts are chosen, in part, for the perspectives they present on important issues such as education, economics, race and religious identity. Relevant issues become the subject of discussion, research, and other coursework. CSL sections of the Honors Seminar connect coursework to community service.

As part of the CSL Honors Seminar curriculum, students contribute at least 18 hours of service with community-based organizations in Holyoke, MA. This integration of service with learning allows students to see how social issues play out in real people’s lives while providing an opportunity to meet community needs.

Honors 291R fulfills the two-credit Honors Seminar 291G requirement (formerly the Dean's Book Courses 191D and 291D). This section is open to all Commonwealth College students.

Honors 391S fulfills the Advanced Honors Seminar requirement (Honors 391D). This section is open to Commonwealth College students with junior or senior status. Sophomores may be admitted at the instructor's discretion.

How to Sign Up
You may register for this course on SPIRE.  The instructor will contact you by email to discuss course requirements and service coordinating. The instructor will ask you to review and complete the CSL Honors Seminar coordination form and submit it to them via email.
