COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING

Since 1994, more than 100 UMass Amherst faculty have designed and taught community service learning courses. Disciplines that have engaged CSL are diverse, ranging from nuclear physics to archaeology to sport management. However wide-ranging, CSL courses share a common commitment to integrate community service with academic study in order to enhance both experiences.
The OCSL is committed to helping faculty engage in teaching, research and service that strengthens student learning while addressing significant community needs. In this section of our website, you will find resources to assist you in understanding the pedagogy and practice of service learning. In addition, we offer tools for incorporating CSL into your teaching, including models of CSL courses and suggestions for building relationships with community organizations.
For those interested in how CSL fits within an academic career, we provide information on the successful integration of service learning into a broader teaching and research agenda. Suggestions for framing CSL and outreach for tenure and promotion processes and information about conferences and publishing opportunities can also be found here.
