COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING
JOIN KIDS/COLLEGE
A General Education (IU) course for all majors
In this 4-credit section (HONORS 292S) of the General Education (IU) course "Engaging with the Community," UMass students will participate in a local after school program to provide an early intervention for youth who are primarily from low-income, immigrant families, and families of color. The program will provide a vision of college for children who, even though they live in a University town, may not see college as a real destination for themselves. UMass students in this course will work with third-graders in an after school program at Crocker Farm Elementary School. Based on the college students' skills and interests and those of the kids participating in the program, UMass students will have the opportunity to create and implement a fun and enriching after-school curriculum. This opportunity is open to all students. Enroll through SPIRE or click here to learn more about Kids College.

GET TO KNOW YOU
Enroll in "Knowing Ourselves and the Community"
This course (HONORS 398S) provides students in Community Service Learning courses with the skills, knowledge, and understanding they need to be effective in their community service placements. Students will develop cultural competencies and explore how their own identities (derived from different social group memberships) intersect with the identities of the people they encounter in their community service. In turn, students will have the opportunity to reflect on and learn from their community service experiences. This course consists of three parts: Pre-service, Weekend Workshop, and Post-service. This opportunity is open to all students. Enroll through SPIRE or click here to learn more about Knowing Ourselves and the Community.
