NONPROFIT INTERNSHIPS IN WASHINGTON, DC

Capital Semester Fall 2009
Georgetown University, Washington, DC
Final Application Deadline – June 1, 2009

Sponsored by The Fund for American Studies in partnership with Georgetown University, Capital Semester combines substantive nonprofit internships, courses for academic credit, and career development activities with exclusive briefings and lectures led by prominent policy experts and nonprofit executives. This fast-paced, residential program is offered each fall and spring and provides students from around the world with opportunities to participate in internships, classes, housing, guest lectures, service projects, site briefings, leadership and professional development. Over half of all students receive full or partial funding based on merit and financial need. Applications for the fall program will be accepted on a rolling basis until the final deadline of June 1, 2009. Students are encouraged to apply by April 24 to be entered into a drawing to win $200 toward travel to Washington, DC for the program. STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY

Global Partnerships for Activism for Cross-Cultural Training is an international training programs for people who want to learn the skills they need to change their communities - or the world. For students, Global PACT is a study abroad program affiliated with universities in the U.S. and abroad; for adults and retirees, Global PACT offers the opportunity to turn professional skills acquired over a lifetime into tools for social transformation. Global PACT will be offering the following courses this summer: Thailand (May 24-June 21); Croatia (July 5-July 25); South Africa (June 30-July 27); Brazil (July 12-August 8); and Cambodia (August 2-August 29). VOLUNTEER & CIVIC OPPORTUNITIES

HOUSATONIC RIVER WALK CLEANUP

Saturday, April 25, 2009; 9am to 2pm

Great Barrington, MA

Volunteers are needed to help cleanup and restore the Housatonic Riverbank in Great Barrington and continue the Housatonic River Walk Trail. River Walk is a half-mile public walking trail. The focus of this cleanup is on removing invasive exotics and replanting with native trees, shrubs and plants, including wetland plants in the W.E.B. DuBois River Garden, the town's riverside park, and the new overlook honoring electrical inventor William Stanley. The workday will be followed by a River Walk Tour. Volunteers are welcome to join landscapers on other days. Please plan to wear safe, protective clothing, including shoes with good traction, gloves, and eye protection. TASTE TEST COOK

The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts is looking for a Serv-Safe Certified Cook to conduct Taste Tests with our shoppers.  The cook will be responsible for preparing recipes provided by our nutrition department that utilize items from the warehouse, and presenting finished products to non-profit agency shoppers.  Good marketing of warehouse items is an integral part of this position.  Taste Tests will be scheduled on Tuesdays or Thursdays, between the hours of 8:00am and 12:00pm.  General cooking skills required, nutrition knowledge a plus.  For more information, please contact Christine Dutton at (413) 247-9738 x104 or christined@foodbankwma.org.  

HOLYOKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADULT LEARNING CENTER SEEKS VOLUNTEER

The Holyoke Community College Adult Learning Center (HCC/ALC) has a volunteer opening for an administrative support staff. The position includes such tasks as answering phone calls about the ALC's Adult Basic Education program, placing students in classes or on waitlists, filing, copying and providing adminstrative support to the counselor. Applicants should be detail- oriented, reliable, able to take direction, have excellent phone skills and a thorough understanding of confidentiality. Computer skills are a plus, as is being bilingual in English and Spanish. This position is ideally 20 hours per week, although 10 hours of volunteering would be welcome. Volunteering hours run through the end of June and begin again during the last week of August. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT AMHERST REGIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

A volunteer is needed to assist an injured teacher with correcting and inputting grades into the computer.  Help is needed between 2:30-4:00pm any day (except Wednesday) and Spanish experience is preferred. PARENT AIDE VOLUNTEERS: HELP PREVENT CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT

Parent Aides receive training to spend 3-5 hours a week supporting a parent in finding resources for their families; increasing understanding of child development; expanding social contacts and reducing isolation.  Parent Aides help parents learn to help themselves in these and many other ways. Volunteers come from all walks of life and share a common interest in building a nurturing relationship with a parent in the community who needs support.  Volunteers do not have to be parents, but must be at least 21 years of age, agree to attend bi-weekly group supervision at the agency, and be available to meet weekly with the parent. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, car insurance and access to a car. A background check is required. If you are caring, non-judgmental and a good listener, you can be a Parent Aide. HAMPSHIRE EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATIVE SEEKS VOLUNTEERS!

Hampshire Educational Collaborative is a non-profit agency that facilitates grant funded afterschool programs for low-income and special education youth. HEC is dedicated to providing elementary and middle school children with a fun, educational and safe place to go after school. SERVICE OPPORTUNITY AT SMITH VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Smith Agricultural Vocational High School is located right next door to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, MA and is looking for individuals interested in assisting in the following ways: scanning books for students who use the Kurzweil Education System; teaching assistance/tutoring of students; assistance with activites/events during Black History Month. EDUCATIONAL SURROGATE PARENT PROGRAM

The Massachusetts Department of Education's Educational Surrogate Parent Program is responsible for recruiting, training, and appointing volunteers to act as Educational Surrogate Parents who oversee the special education program of students who are in the custody of the Department of Social Services.  For more information, contact Deanna Forist at (508) 792-7679, x203.

STAVROS CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING

BERKSHIRE CHILDREN & FAMILIES NEEDS YOUR HELP

COMMUNITY ACTION/FIRST CALL FOR HELP SEEKS A VOLUNTEER

Community Action/First Call for Help in Northampton seeks a volunteer to assist with answering phones, providing service information to callers, and greeting clients who come to the office.  For more information, contact Carolyn Bellany at cbellany@communityaction.us.

YOUTH ACTION COALITION  

YAC works with interns and long-term volunteers to engage young people in projects that involve dialogue and art-making.  YAC offers three programs in Amherst: Get Up Get Down, GirlsEyeView (also in Ware), and Video Vanguards.  Training and supervision are provided. NEW ENGLAND FARM WORKERS COUNCIL SEEKS MENTORS

NEFWC is looking for men and women to mentor a child for ONE hour ONCE a week by being a "friend," doing group activities and offering one-on-one mentoring. Our major goal is academic improvement, but the mentor is not there to be a tutor, but simply to build a friendship. At one point in time we've all had someone who has impacted our life or made a difference by simply listening, being a positive role model or just being a friend and these are the qualities these children/youth lack. It's been proven that if a child has a positive role model in their life, who they can trust, their grades increase and absences decrease. WINDHORSE ASSOCIATES SEEKS A HOUSEMATE

Windhorse Associates in Northampton seeks housemates to live with persons in psychiatric recovery. This is an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand, intimate experience of individual recovery and for any human services field, but also of interest to artists, political activists, and humanists of all stripes. Windhorse Associates uses a mindfulness-based philosophy in working with people experiencing extreme mind states, including depression, trauma, and mental illness in all its forms. Specific experience in this field is not required. A personal contemplative discipline such as yoga, meditation, a serious religious pratice or an artistic discipline is highly desirable. Time commitment is approximately 25 hours per week for a minimum six-month commitment. Compensation is $650/month stipend, free room and board, and benefits. SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH DOROT

Spend a summer learning about DOROT and serving the elderly in the New York community. DOROT is a non-profit organization on the Upper West Side of Manhattan that seeks to enhance the lives of Jewish and other elderly through a dynamic partnership of volunteers, professionals, and elders; and to foster mutually beneficial interaction between the generations. VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR PERSONALIZED ELECTRONICS TRAINING

A volunteer is needed to help a quadriplegic learn to use an electronic system that activates and controls household electronic equipment such as the phone. This role is for a limited time (about 1.5 to two months) and would requires two or three late afternoon visits a weeks for no more than two hours at a time. Facilitate Service-Learning Programs for Middle and High School Students

Spend time this spring or summer helping young people discover how to make a difference in the world! The Civic Education Project (CEP), a leadership and citizenship program at Northwestern University, is now hiring exceptional staff for its Spring & Summer 2009 service-learning programs. CEP offers week-long field study programs for 9th-12th graders during the academic year, and intensive, three-week service-learning courses for 7th-12th graders during the summer. CEP programs explore complex social issues through academic study, meaningful service work and meetings with community leaders, and helps teach young people how to apply their skills and abilities to pressing social issues in their own communities. This year, CEP will offer programs in Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, covering a wide variety of topics. Instructional, residential, and administrative positions are available, ranging from one-week to seven-week sessions.
