The Citizen Scholars Program offers students an environment to think critically about social issues and act creatively to produce change. In this academic service-learning program, students develop knowledge and skills needed to be effective community leaders who can work collaboratively with others for social change. VOLUNTEER & CIVIC OPPORTUNITIES

GIRLS INCORPORATED

Girls Incorporated of Holyoke Mentoring Programs are looking for Phenomenal Women who are 18 and over to mentor young girls 5-18 years of age in Holyoke and surrounding areas.  Commitment: one-on-one, 4-8 hours a month of meeting time for at lease one year. We feel you can increase the opportunities and improve the chances for girls to achieve academic and career success, receive guidance in goal-setting and explore and enhance personal skill, talents and interests. BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF GREATER HOLYOKE

Seeking volunteers

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke welcomes volunteers to any of its afternoon and/or evening programs. The organization is looking for people who can commit for an entire semester. The Boys & Girls Club welcomes students to tutor the youngsters and/or help with homework. The organization is also interested in students who have particular skills, such as dance, arts & crafts, and would like to lead a program. GREAT FALLS MIDDLE SCHOOL (Turners Falls, MA)

Seeking volunteers

The seventh grade team at Great Falls Middle School has identified a need for tutors to help students in a 1:1 or small group setting, in a variety of subjects.  Students who might be interested in engaging in this type of service would be meeting a great need, and would learn a lot in return! $CHOLARSHIPS / GRANT$ / FELLOW$HIPS

CLASS OF 1941 HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Applications due: March 10

Two awards of at least $1,000 are available to students who articulate how they plan to use their education toward the betterment of the world. Recipients are chosen from junior and senior Commonwealth College students in good standing who provide documentation of their community service and submit a written essay. COOKE FAMILY FUND SCHOLARSHIP

Applications due: March 10

Recipients of the $1,000 Cooke Family Fund Scholarship are selected from senior Commonwealth College students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, successful completion of research, and significant university or community service. This award is endowed by the Cooke family in memory of family members, several of whom were alumni of the University: Theodore F. Cooke, Sr. ’01, Robert G. Cooke ’25, Dorothy Cooke Robbins ’28, Theodore F. Cooke, Jr. ’34, Helen Cooke Rudzinski Hough, and Alma Cooke Kendall Bassett. Click here for the application.

LAWRENCE PAYNE '77 PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

Applications due: March 10

This award was endowed by the Class of 1977 in memory of their classmate who graduated with Departmental Honors in Political Science. Mr. Payne died with Commerce Secretary Ron Brown in the 1996 plane crash in Croatia. Award recipients are selected from senior Commonwealth College students based on their academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to public service. Click here for the application.

UMASS AMHERST FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE

Applications due: March 28

Annually, the UMass Amherst Provost's Committee on Service Learning awards grants to units and faculty planning to build CSL into a course, a major, or into other parts of their curriculum.  Five types of awards will be available for 2008-2009. Click here for more information about available fellowships.

AWARDS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT

Applications due: April 11

These awards were established to recognize individuals' positive contributions to communities outside of the university and to appreciate collaborative efforts to meet community needs while advancing student learning.  UMass students, faculty and staff will be recognized for their meaningful involvement with communities on and off campus, whether it occur within the context of the curriculum, community-based research, a student organization, dorm life or active citizenship. Staff at community-based organizations will also be honored for effectively engaging UMass faculty, staff and students in community efforts.  Award recipients demonstrate exemplary efforts in support of OCSL's mission and use their time, innovative thinking, energy and resources to make positive contributions either on campus or to an external community during the 2007-2008 academic year.  Click here for more information and to download the application/nomination form.

STAPLES FOUNDATION

Applications due: February 29-March 14; June2-June16

The Staples Foundation for Learning aims to teach, train, and inspire people from all walks of life by providing educational and growth opportunities. The Foundation supports programs that provide job skills and/or education for all people, with special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. The goal of the Foundation's grant program is to help local groups with programs and services that will positively impact their communities every day. Nonprofit organizations throughout the United States, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, that address the Foundation's mission are eligible to apply. For the first two funding cycles in 2008, proposals must be submitted between February 29 and March 14 and between June 2 and June 16. Visit the website listed below for application guidelines. The Frank Newman Leadership Award provides financial support and mentorship to assist students in achieving their civic and academic goals. Two $5,000 awards are available. For guidelines and eligibility, view full application online.

STUDENT HUMANITARIAN AWARD AVAILABLE

The Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award recognizes students for their innovative strategies in addressing community issues and needs, and their efforts to build and sustain this work among their peers and within their institution. FACULTY AWARD AVAILABLE
Applications due: March 21

The Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning recognizes one faculty member for exemplary leadership in advancing the civic learning of students, including public scholarship, building campus commitment to service-learning and civic engagement, and fostering reciprocal community partnerships. FLANAGAN FUND SUPPORTS COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING & MORE

The Maureen Flanagan Scholarship offers students opportunities above and beyond the standard college experience such as study abroad, research, summer internships, alternative spring breaks, community service, or other initiatives that complement and enhance students' coursework. COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE WORKSHOP ON COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING

March 12, 2008; 6-7pm, 504 Goodell Bldg, UMass Amherst

The workshop scheduled for March 12 will feature information about Community Service Learning and opportunities to connect community service with academic work, including the Citizen Scholars Program, Alternative Spring Break and CSL Independent Studies. IMPACT CONFERENCE

The IMPACT Conference is historically the largest convening in the country of campus community members involved in service, activism, politics, advocacy, and other socially responsible work across philosophical and ideological lines. This event builds on the legacy set forth by the COOL Conference and the Idealist Campus Conference, spanning an incredible 23-year history. 7th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY CONFERENCE

Women in Politics: Changing the Face of Power

The conference will explore ways in which women are shaping today's political landscape, both globally and locally. The conference will examine women's different paths to political power; women's choices to work within political systems or push against them; and women's political priorities in the U.S. and abroad. COMMUNITY-ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP FACULTY DEVELOPMENT CHARRETTE*

Call for Applications (due March 17, 2008)

May 28-30, 2008; Chapel Hill, NC

Faculty for the Engaged Campus is seeking teams from 20 diverse colleges and universities across the U.S. to participate in a charrette to facilitate development of innovative campus-wide mechanisms for preparing and supporting community-engaged faculty. This opportunity is for institutions committed to furthering their investment in community-engaged scholarship (CES) through effective faculty development and would benefit from focused, collaborative learning with a cadre of like-minded others. (*A charrette is an intensely focused multi-day session that uses a collaborative approach to create realistic and achievable designs. This charrette will convene campus teams, project leadership and expert advisors to collaboratively design innovative models of CES faculty development.)

THE FUND FOR PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH IS HIRING

Information session and interviews: March 11-12

Are you interested in a job fighting global warming or promoting gay & lesbian civil rights? Here's your chance! We have job openings starting in August 2008! The Fund for Public Interest Research (aka "the Fund") is hiring smart, passionate students to help run our offices across the country next year, working on behalf of leading progressive organizations including the Sierra Club, the State Environment Groups (e.g. Environment Massachusetts), and Human Rights Campaign. HARVARD'S SUMMER URBAN PROGRAM IS LOOKING FOR COUNSELORS

Applications due: March 12

The Summer Urban Program (SUP) is a group of twelve student-run summer camps serving over 800 children, combining academic work in the morning with field trips in the afternoon.  Senior Counselors are in charge of a classroom of roughly ten children.  It's an extremely demanding job, but very satisfying. This is great preparation for students interested in teaching after college.  Compensation is $3400 and includes free housing.
