CLASS OF 1941 HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Two awards of at least $1,000 are available to students who articulate how they plan to use their education toward the betterment of the world. Recipients are chosen from junior and senior Commonwealth College students in good standing who provide documentation of their community service and submit a written essay. COOKE FAMILY FUND SCHOLARSHIP
Applications due: March 10
Recipients of the $1,000 Cooke Family Fund Scholarship are selected from senior Commonwealth College students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, successful completion of research, and significant university or community service. This award is endowed by the Cooke family in memory of family members, several of whom were alumni of the University: Theodore F. Cooke, Sr. ’01, Robert G. Cooke ’25, Dorothy Cooke Robbins ’28, Theodore F. Cooke, Jr. ’34, Helen Cooke Rudzinski Hough, and Alma Cooke Kendall Bassett. Click here for the application.
LAWRENCE PAYNE '77 PUBLIC SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP
Applications due: March 10
This award was endowed by the Class of 1977 in memory of their classmate who graduated with Departmental Honors in Political Science. Mr. Payne died with Commerce Secretary Ron Brown in the 1996 plane crash in Croatia. Award recipients are selected from senior Commonwealth College students based on their academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to public service.

UMASS AMHERST FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE

Annually, the UMass Amherst Provost's Committee on Service Learning awards grants to units and faculty planning to build CSL into a course, a major, or into other parts of their curriculum. AWARDS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ENGAGEMENT
Applications due: April 11
These awards were established to recognize individuals' positive contributions to communities outside of the university and to appreciate collaborative efforts to meet community needs while advancing student learning. UMass students, faculty and staff will be recognized for their meaningful involvement with communities on and off campus, whether it occur within the context of the curriculum, community-based research, a student organization, dorm life or active citizenship. Staff at community-based organizations will also be honored for effectively engaging UMass faculty, staff and students in community efforts. Award recipients demonstrate exemplary efforts in support of OCSL's mission and use their time, innovative thinking, energy and resources to make positive contributions either on campus or to an external community during the 2007-2008 academic year.

STAPLES FOUNDATION

The Staples Foundation for Learning aims to teach, train, and inspire people from all walks of life by providing educational and growth opportunities. The Foundation supports programs that provide job skills and/or education for all people, with special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. The goal of the Foundation's grant program is to help local groups with programs and services that will positively impact their communities every day. Nonprofit organizations throughout the United States, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii, that address the Foundation's mission are eligible to apply. For the first two funding cycles in 2008, proposals must be submitted between February 29 and March 14 and between June 2 and June 16. Visit the website listed below for application guidelines.

Swearer Student Humanitarian Award recognizes students for their innovative strategies in addressing community issues and needs, and their efforts to build and sustain this work among their peers and within their institution. FACULTY AWARD AVAILABLE

The Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning recognizes one faculty member for exemplary leadership in advancing the civic learning of students, including public scholarship, building campus commitment to service-learning and civic engagement, and fostering reciprocal community partnerships.

The Maureen Flanagan Scholarship offers students opportunities above and beyond the standard college experience such as study abroad, research, summer internships, alternative spring breaks, community service, or other initiatives that complement and enhance students' coursework.
