Independent Capstone
Oral Defense

An oral defense, conducted by your research committee, follows the completion of your Capstone thesis or project. The defense is usually held before final exams to give students time to incorporate suggestions and make final corrections before submitting their final manuscript to Commonwealth College. Oral defenses vary by committee, but generally, you and the committee members will meet for an hour or so during which time the committee will question you about:

- your research techniques or creative experience
- the knowledge or skills you’ve acquired
- the applications and usefulness of your results
- issues for future exploration
- your future goals

The location of the oral defense is up to you and your committee. At the discretion of your chair, your defense may be restricted to the committee or opened to a broader audience.

The oral defense provides an excellent opportunity to share what you have learned and to receive valuable feedback from invested and knowledgeable reviewers.
