Richard CooksonMajors: Legal Studies, EconomicsHometown: Spring Valley, New York"Both my majors challenge me to think independently and formulate my own theories," Richard Cookson declares. His majors in Legal Studies and Economics correspond with his desire to be lawyer as well as his interest in U.S. and world economies. Firmly believing that "lawyers have a responsibility in enacting change in society through civic and legislative reform," he is confident that his experiences at Commonwealth College have prepared him for the challenges that go with the responsibility. As a member of the Commonwealth College Student Advisory Board, Richard represents student interests within Commonwealth College. Bi-weekly meetings with the dean and staff allow him to be an active contributor to the honors community and the university at large. He has also made several trips to Boston to discuss issues with the college's Alumni Board. "I met alumni who are now lawyers and people in financial services with whom I was able to network. These interactions have led to internships, and provided me with a solid foundation in my intended career." Richard adds that he has learned time management. A cellist, he was a member of the UMass Symphony Orchestra before founding the Commonwealth String Quartet. He has also served as the president of a local fraternity chapter and vice-president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the representative body for traditionally African-American Greek organizations. "In the honors college and other UMass organizations, I've found my strengths and experienced the satisfaction of positively impacting others through leadership and being a mentor." |
