"Falling into the gaps is not even an option at Commonwealth College," says Kate Baldacci. "UMass, with its undergraduate student population exceeding 17,000, is a far cry from my high school," she explains. "Yet with Commonwealth College, it maintains the charm of a small school." Kate cites the crucial role "the crew of diligent advisors in the Commonwealth College support network" played in helping her navigate her way.

As a Citizen Scholar, Kate is taking honors courses that challenge her to think critically about social issues in addition to performing community service. She describes the two-year Citizen Scholars Program as "a community service course to the max." She is a Big Sister to a local six-year-old and a student voice on the Big Brothers Big Sisters advisory board. "I am fully immersed in the local community, participating in and organizing events that take place all over the Pioneer Valley."

Kate also received a Research Assistant Fellowship, working with Political Science professor John Brigham. She attributes the opportunity to the relationship they established in an honors course. "UMass professors are a unique breed. They bend over backwards to make themselves accessible and seek out complex issues to inspire students."

What has Kate gained from UMass? "Aside from strong bonds with faculty and lasting friendships, I have a better sense of self. I can truly grow here. I know now that wherever I go I am bringing a piece of UMass with me because it is embedded in who I am."
